Developmental milestones

General guideposts, not deadlines

Every child grows on their own timeline. These are typical ranges — if something feels off, an evaluation brings clarity.

0–12 months

  • Responds to name
  • Babbles and imitates sounds
  • Reaches, grasps, transfers objects
  • Sits, crawls, pulls to stand

1–2 years

  • Uses 50+ words by age 2
  • Combines two words
  • Follows simple directions
  • Scribbles, stacks blocks, uses a spoon

3–4 years

  • Speaks in sentences others understand
  • Plays alongside and with peers
  • Dresses with some help
  • Draws simple shapes

5–6 years

  • Tells stories and answers questions
  • Writes name and letters
  • Manages buttons and zippers
  • Handles transitions with support

Early intervention

Why starting early matters

The first years of life are the brain's most adaptable season. Early, targeted therapy takes advantage of that window — often meaning fewer services later and greater independence sooner.

In Florida, families of children under three can also explore the Early Steps program, while school-age children may qualify for school-based services. We're glad to help you understand how private therapy fits alongside those supports.
